| Isla Mujeres, known as the "Island of
Women", is a tiny island off the coast of Cancun Mexico in
the Caribbean Sea. The Maya moon Goddess Ixchel was revered
for her powers of love, healing, fertility and medicine.
Ruins of her temple remain on the south tip and most
easterly point of the island. This Mayan isle vibrates on
female energy and I felt this connection while being here
with my girlfriend and sister. Until the 1970's, fishing
was the obscure livelihood here and tourism was unheard of,
but now, the market is filled with tourists. Surprisingly,
many shops as well as homes have colorful doors welcoming
you. Entrances brightly painted while some were weathered
and abandoned. Among the humble, these doors had so much
hope and happiness, that I had to photograph them.
The word "door" has been used as a metaphor to describe
the opening and closing of life's lessons. It represents
gateways of change. Combining quotes by notable authors,
poets and many others about doors, make an empowering visual
statement. In my book I have created these insightful
messages.
My return visits to beautiful Isla Mujeres always are
"perfect" and captivating. May new doors open for you.
In-Joy, Miyuki
